1. Open focusing.jpg file from our sample folder (the default path is C:\Program Files\PSP Book) and set the magnification level to 100%.

2. As you can see, the bird is badly out of focus. Surely, the program can't bring it into focus. However, some tools can imitate sharpening. From the program menu, select Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen. The command has been applied.

3. Scrutinize the image and estimate the effect. Well, perhaps with a better image this method might do. Let's try a stronger command Adjust > Sharpness > Sharpen More. At this time, the image really looks sharper!

NB The bad thing about the both tested tools is that they are completely automatic. More advanced techniques, allowing us to apply sharpening with controllable parameters to a pre-defined image area (for example, to the bird only) will be explained in follow-up chapters.

4. Pull down Adjust > Color Balance. A dialog box appears.

5. This simple tool allows us to adjust the image color. If you have used it previously, it offers to reuse the last applied settings. To start your adjustments from the beginning click reset button.

6. By default this dialog displays Before and After previews - in my opinion, much too small ones for comfortable working. Hide the previews and enable auto-proof, as it is shown in the movie. Now we can pre-estimate the correction result right in the image window.

7. Move the slider to make the image cooler or warmer.

8. When ready, click OK to apply your correction.

NB More advanced color and tonal adjustment techniques are explained in the 2nd chapter.
